Unit 5: Transportation
Essential Question: How does my community use various modes of transportation?
Friday, January 22
Good morning and Happy Friday!
Today we are reading our fourth Donald Crews book. It is about a school bus. Who drives the school bus? Where does the school bus take us? Who works in a school? We will discuss the community helper who help us in school today.
Read ALOUD
School Bus by Donald Crews: What is large (or small), bright yellow, and filled with students? A school bus!
Questions to ask
1-What do school buses do?
2-Why are school buses helpful?
3- Why are school buses yellow?
You read this week four books by Donald Crews
Record yourself on Seesaw or email us of you answering the following questions.

Math -
Feely Box (Match)
Secretly hide a trapezoid from a Shape Set in the Feely Box (a decorated box with a hole large enough to fit a child’s hand but not so large that you can see into the box).
Display five shapes from another Shape Set, including the one that exactly matches the one you hid.
Have a child put his or her hand in the box to feel the shape; that child should then point to the matching shape on display.
Encourage the child to name the shape and explain how he or she figured it out. Discuss the shape, emphasizing straightness of the sides and the number of sides and angles.
Note -- these shapes can be cut out of paper or cardboard or any other stiff material you have on hand.

Tuesday, January 19
Today we begin week three in our unit of Transportation. This week we will be looking at the question Who operates the vehicles in my community?
We will be examining vehicles belonging to the various community workers in our neighborhood.
The following is a list of vocabulary words we will be using - airplane, airport, ambulance, barge, cement mixer, conductor, crossing guard, driver, EMT, engineer, fire engine, firefighter, harbor, helicopter, locomotive, mail carrier, mail truck, operator, pilot, police car, police officer, school bus, tanker, tugboat, train tracks
Our read a longs this week will all be by the same author Donald Crews. As a class we will discuss the following questions - What is similar? What is different? Which book do they like best? Why?
Let us warm up.
Harbor by Donald Crews - This book explores the color and action of liners, tankers, tugs, barges, ferry boats, and fire boats in the harbor. This is especially important to us because we have the New York harbor so close to us.
Questions to ask your child
Activities
1- Virtual field trip of SI Ferry - Bonus Episode: Take A Virtual Ride On The Staten Island Ferry - YouTube
Another video - A Ride on the Staten Island Ferry - YouTube
2- Talk about the importance of tugboats and how they push and pull bigger boats in and out of the harbor. Provide some cardboard boxes and fill them up with books, blocks or other heavy items. Have children experiment with pushing and pulling heavy things. Is it easier to push them or to pull them? Tell us all about it on Seesaw or email it to us.
3- Do bubble painting to create an ocean. Fill two paper cups half full of water. Add a tablespoon of dish detergent and a tablespoon of food coloring to each cup. Provide a straw for each child. Cut a v shaped notch about an inch from the top of each straw. This prevents children from sucking the detergent mixture into their mouth. Place a large sheet of manila paper under the cups of detergent mixture and have children blow bubbles until they overflow and spill on to the paper, leaving bubble prints. Once the paper is covered with bubble prints, have children paint pictures of boats in the ocean. Show us your artwork on Seesaw or email it to us.
4-Discuss the meaning of the words wharf, dock, pier and warehouse.
• A wharf is a platform built along the shore where boats can pull up beside and unload their cargo
• A pier is a platform that juts out into the water that allows people to get on and off a boat or ship. Sometimes piers are places for entertainment.
• A dock is similar to a wharf. It is a place for ships to unload its cargo.
• A warehouse is a building that is used to store cargo from a ship.
Give your child boats and fabric when playing with blocks to build piers, wharfs and docks. Place pictures of boats and ships in the center to inspire building.
ELA
This week our letter is the letter Nn.The sound is at the beginning of: nest, neck, nose, and navy.
Math
This week we will extend our knowledge of shapes. We will specifically focus on the shapes of trapezoid and rhombus. Both trapezoids and rhombuses are polygons, closed shapes made only of straight line segments. A trapezoid has one pair of parallel sides; a rhombus has two pairs of parallel sides all the same length.
Show a picture of a rhombus; write and say its name (have children say it too). Ask children what details they notice. Encourage them to compare the rhombus to other objects in the classroom, as well as objects from where they live and places they go. Repeat the same “show and tell” for the trapezoid.

Experiment:
Supplies Needed
Young kids learn by exploring, observing, and figuring out the way things work by experimenting. Exploring ramps and friction encourages all of the above. Kids will learn that friction can be two surfaces rubbing against one another. We experience this when we rub our hands together when they are cold. Friction is also the resistance an object meets when moving over another surface. The materials you attached to the ramps changed the surface of the ramp. The different cars will experience different amounts of friction when going down these ramps causing the cars to speed up or slow down some.
Art: Design a Rollercoaster ride.
Roller Coasters are fun. They have lots of curves that go up and down. See the Slinky Dog ride at Disney: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fuAwB1RBcIs

The Bus for Us by Suzanne Bloom
It’s the first day of school for Tess, and it’s also her very first ride on a school bus. Waiting at the bus stop with her older friend Gus, Tess eagerly asks, “Is this the bus for us, Gus?” as each vehicle passes by. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ELeUPohwEdw
Activities
First cut your paper plate in half. Straight up the center. This will give you TWO school buses.
* Go ahead and cut a small triangle/slot out of one side {see my example} to give the school bus its long, iconic front.
* Now take your tissue paper and cut it into small squares {let the kids practice their cutting skills}
* Take your paper plate halves and put a good amount of glue all over them.
* Have children place the tissue/construction paper on top of the glue, until they are completely covered.
* When they are done with that, set aside to let them dry completely while you trim out the other bus features from black paper {think tires, windows, etc}
* To finish off the Paper Plate School Bus kid craft – simply staple/glue the cardstock pieces in their designated spots.
* Then have children spell out “School Bus” with stickers and add other embellishments to really make it their own!
* Now display proudly for all to see!

In this heartfelt and universal story, a mother and daughter look forward to their special Saturday routine together every single week. But this Saturday, one thing after another goes wrong–ruining storytime, salon time, picnic time, and the puppet show they’d been looking forward to going to all week. Mom is nearing a meltdown…until her loving daughter reminds her that being together is the most important thing of all
Activities
Invite your child to pretend to be different types of transportation. Make sure every child has enough space to do the exercises. Ride a bike: lay on your back and pretend to pedal. Row a boat: sit, legs in a V, pretend to row. Run: run in place. Fly a helicopter: circle arm round and round above head like a propeller. Rocket ship: countdown and blast off. Add other types of transportation as desired. Ask your child when would they use these different types of transportation and why each type might be useful.

Our foundational text
The Lost Property Office by Emily Rand
A little girl and her mother are on the train, going to visit Grandpa. It's very busy--hold on tight! But when they arrive at their destination and get off the train they realize something is wrong: the little girl's beloved teddy bear has gone missing! Just when it looks like she'll never see Teddy again, Grandpa has an idea! And suddenly the little girl is off on a magical journey to rescue her favorite stuffed friend. Have you ever wondered where your lost objects go? With charming and stylish illustrations, this book is perfect for curious minds.

Please send in the following items for your child:
Two complete extra sets of clothes, in case of toileting accidents. Be sure to write your child’s name on the bag and label each article of clothing.
We want to get to know each other’s families. A family photo can make your child feel comfortable in the room. We will make a special space for them to hang on display! You can email your picture to frizzuto@sacredheartschoolsi.org or bring on the first day of school.
We ask that each child brings in one crib size set (fitted crib sheet and a thin top sheet or blanket) for nap time. Our storage is very limited. They will be sent home each Friday so they can be washed over the weekend.
Sacred Heart School Folders will be used throughout the year for notes and announcements. Please bring them back and forth every day.
Birthday Celebrations!
You are welcome to send in cupcakes for your child's birthday; they may be store-bought. We ask, however, that you please make certain your treats are peanut/nut free, as we have some children in the classrooom with allergies. If you would like to send in cupcakes for your child's birthday, please just let me know a day or two in advance. No candles, please.
