Welcome to our new unit of study “My Five Senses”. Your child will continue their journey of exploration and learning with an exciting topic focused on how we use our five senses to explore, investigate, and understand ourselves and our world. Children naturally explore the world around them through their senses. In this unit we support cognitive and language development by encouraging children to observe things in their immediate environment and begin to describe them in detail. These foundational inquiry and science skills will spark the curiosity and interest of pre-K children as they start to use those observations to make predictions, ask questions and draw conclusions: key higher-level science skills that they will use in upcoming pre-K units and in kindergarten. In this Unit, there is a focus on developing the Physical Development and Health Skills.

By the end of this unit your child will understand:  There are five senses. They are smell, taste, touch, sight and hearing.  We use our senses to understand our bodies, learn what they need, and keep us safe.  We use our senses to learn about the people, places, objects, and environment around us.  We experience and interact with the world differently when our senses, such as vision or hearing, are impaired.

Our foundational text is Rah, Rah, Radishes! A Vegetable Chant by April Sayre

With a raucous, rhyming text, Rah, Rah, Radishes! celebrates fresh vegetables, nature’s bright colors, and the joy of healthy eating. 

When listening to the story keep these questions in mind. 

• Dig into the Story Develop children’s comprehension of the book by discussing higher-level information (e.g., link characters’ feelings to their actions and/or events in the story, predict what might happen, summarize chunks of text). 
• Use prompts throughout the story, such as: 
  •  Pointing to each vegetable as it is named. •
  •  How many different peppers are in the book? 
  • How many squashes? •
  •  Why does the author say “thank you, farmers, thank you, bees?
• Eating utilizes all five senses. Talk to your child about how one sense may influence your eating experience in different ways. E.g.: Green eggs and ham may taste and smell delicious but do not look appealing.
• When vegetables are raw (not cooked) they are usually crunchy. What are some other crunchy foods?

Activities:

• After reading the story, make connections to an aspect of the child’s real life by: 
  • Ask which vegetables are their favorites and
  • Which vegetables they haven’t tried. 
  • Read the section “A Few More Bites” at the end of the book. Work together to become an expert on a favorite vegetable. 
  • Talk about the differences between fruits and vegetables.

ELA/Writing/Art/Science:

Rah, Rah, Rhyming: Pick your favorite veggies from the book, taste them and write a simple poem about each one.

Ask your child to choose at least three veggies from the book. Have your child help find them at the grocery store. Wash the veggies and cut or peel them (if needed), then let your child taste a few bites of each one.After each taste, invite your child to think of words that describe each veggie and make a word list. Have them think about texture, flavor, mouth feel, smell, how all their senses perceive the vegetable.  Talk about rhyming. Help your child come up with other words that rhyme with words on their word list. For inspiration, flip through the pages and identify rhyming words in the book. Write each poem on a separate piece of paper. Invite your child to add an illustration to each one and staple or tie them together to make a book.

Good morning and Happy Friday! We explored pumpkins and also spent this week talking about one of the five senses - the sense of hearing. What would happen if you couldn’t hear? How would you get to know the world around you? People who are deaf and hard of hearing use their other senses to get to know the world. We will be exploring this today. Today we will work on a special rectangle. It has four sides and four corner. It is special because all the sides are the same size and all the angles are right angles. This shape is called a square.

• Play - Shape Show: Squares Show and name a large, flat square. Walk your fingers around its perimeter, describing and exaggerating your actions: straight side…turn, straight side…turn, straight side…turn, straight side…stop. Ask children how many sides the square has, and count the sides with them. Review that all sides of a square are the same length, and all “turns” are right angles. To model this, you may place stirrers that are the same length as each side on each side. Remind children about right angles (uppercase Ls or the corner of a doorway). Make uppercase Ls with children using thumbs and index fingers. Fit your L on the angles of the square. Ask children what things they have at home that are squares. Show different examples of squares. Have children walk around a large, flat square, such as a floor tile. Once seated, have children draw squares in the air.

Pumpkins are a squash. A pumpkin starts out as a seed and then it forms a sprout. The vine comes out and the flower grows on the vine. After the flower the pumpkin begins to grow on the vine. It is green first before they turn orange.They are fully grown in the fall.

Activities

• Science - Listening Walk: Take a walk outside; focus on listening and draw your child”s attention to things they can hear. Help your child label the sounds. This activity meets the standard - PK.AL.4. Exhibits curiosity, interest, and willingness to learn new things and have new experiences. Please post a picture of your child’s drawing on to seesaw. • Art/SS -Instruments: Have your child make various instruments such as shakers or string instruments. You will be raiding the recycle bin. To make shakers, provide empty tubes, containers, plastic eggs, etc. as well as materials to put inside such as rice, beans or beads. Secure the containers and have children decorate if desired. To make string instruments provide various boxes and containers as well as rubber bands, string, and tape. As children create, invite them to think about how the instruments will make sounds, and encourage them to start thinking about the relationship between movement and sound. We continue our journey on shapes. Geometry and spatial concepts are important mathematical topics. They form the foundation of much mathematical learning, as well as other subjects. Spatial concepts are essential to daily living, such as understanding directions (“Please put that toy on top of the shelf under the windows.”) and maps in social studies, visual arts, sciences, and so on.

• Play the game -  Shape Show: Triangles  - Show and name a large, flat triangle. Walk your fingers around its perimeter, describing and exaggerating your actions: straight side…turn, straight side…turn, straight side…stop. Ask children how many sides the triangle has, and count the sides with them. Today is October 9th. You are going to learn about a very famous explorer called Christopher Columbus. On Monday, October 12th, we have a day off of school to celebrate his voyage to the Americas. People celebrate their Italian Heritage too.

This day is also called Indigenous People day. When Columbus arrived in America, he met  the Native American people who lived here. We celebrate and honor their culture too. We will learn about them at Thanksgiving.

1. Make an Origami Boat (click here) Does it sail?
2. Decorate an empty paper towel roll to use as a telescope. 
3. Columbus Hat: Print onto card stock, color, then cut apart the pieces. The two long rectangles at the bottom should be glued or taped together then trimmed to go around your child’s head. (Click here for pattern)
4. Map: Dip a piece of white paper into cold tea or coffee to make it look old. Draw a map on it.

Dramatic Play:

Wear your Columbus hat and use your telescope to explore outdoors or in your house. What do you see? Draw some of the things on your map like an explorer.

Math:

• Display pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters for your child to examine. Ask your child to make stacks of coins that are the same shape and same size. Also, using one of each type of coin, have your child arrange them in order from smallest to largest. Benefit: This provides practice with identifying congruent shapes, making comparisons, and introducing coins. 
• With your child, draw basic shapes on the sidewalk or driveway with chalk. Ask your child to name each shape and tell you about it. Benefit: This provides practice with identifying shapes and helps reinforce the attributes of different shapes. For example, a square has four sides that are the same length; a circle is round and curves the same without breaks; a triangle has three sides. 
• Have family members count slowly to 15 every time they wash their hands, which is actually recommended by health professionals. Benefit: This provides counting practice.

Today we are going to learn about people who can not see. This means that they are blind. Blind people use their other senses to help keep them safe and to learn about the world around them. Some people use canes, some people use guide dogs and some people use echolocation which means they make sounds that help them know where objects are.  To read books, blind people use braille. They read with their fingers by feeling the words. 

Read Aloud:

Rainbow Joe and Me by Maria Diaz Strom: Eloise shares her love of colors with her blind friend Rainbow Joe, who makes his own colors when he plays beautiful notes on his saxophone. He tells Eloise that he can make the colors sing.

Questions:

1. What’s your favorite color? Why do you like it so much?
2. What do you enjoy about painting pictures?
3. Have you ever tried to imagine something that you couldn’t see? What was  it? What helped you come up with the image in your head?
4. Do you have a special grown-up friend or relative? What are some things  you talk about with that person?
5. What are the five senses? How do people use each sense? Why are they  important to us?

Art:

Try painting while listening to different kinds of music. Play some classical music or jazz. Listen carefully. Paint long strokes or short strokes, fast or slow as the music changes. How does the music make you feel? What colors does the music make you think of? Try closing your eyes and painting.

Science:

In the story, Joe has the nickname Rainbow Joe. The colors of the rainbow are known as the spectrum. White light from the sun shines through water droplets which bend the light and break it up into the different colors of the spectrum—red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and violet. 

Make a Rainbow in a Bottle: For this project, you'll need some special equipment. This experiment, however, is special because it is the same one Sir Isaac Newton did when discovering properties of light. With your child, fill up a fishbowl or glass three-fourths of the way. Submerge a small hand mirror in the water, and balance it on the side of the glass. With one hand, hold up a white piece of cardboard in front of the mirror, and with the other hand, shine a flashlight into the mirror. You've created a rainbow in a bottle that will reflect on the cardboard paper.

Dramatic Play:

1. Dress up in a colorful outfit. See how many colors you can wear. Do a fashion show for your family, describing your outfit.
2. Close your eyes and feel what is around you. How would you move around your home if you were blind?

3. Draw several other circles and shapes that are not circles but could be mistaken for them (not perfectly round). Discuss their differences. 
4. Summarize by reviewing that a circle is perfectly round and consists of a curved line that always curves the same.

Today we are going to look at colors and practice retelling a story. We see colors with our eyes. There are special parts of our eyes called cones that help us see colors. Light helps us to see color. Can you see colors in the dark?

If you could change the color of an animal in the book Brown Bear, Brown Bear What Do You See! Which animal would you change and what color would you make it? (Pink duck? Green squirrel?) Draw your animal and color or paint it. Send us a picture on Seesaw and tell us about it. 

Dramatic Play:

Print out the brown bear puppets. Glue them onto popsicle sticks or straws. Make a puppet show retelling the story.

1. Circles and cans. Display several food cans of different sizes and discuss their shape (round). 
2. Look at the tops and bottoms. Point out that they are circular. The edges are circles.
3. Trace around the cans on a paper or papers. 
4. Ask your child to match the can to the traced circle. If they are not sure, have them place the can on top of the tracing to match it. 

Reflect: Draw an oval. Ask your child why this shape is not a circle. (they might say it is because it is squished, crushed, does not go all the way round the same)

Exercise:

Throw and catch a ball with your child. Explain that they have to keep their eyes on the ball to help them catch it.

Take a sensory walk together. Pay attention to what you hear, see, feel and smell. Discuss how you can use your senses to stay safe when walking outside. How do our eyes help keep us safe? For example, looking for cars before crossing the street or identifying unsafe items to touch such as garbage or sharp items. How about our ears? Can our sense of smell help keep us safe? How?

Black and White: Invite your child to use black and white crayons/pencils and write on black/white paper. Before writing or drawing, encourage your child to predict what happens when you use black crayons on black paper. What about white crayons on white paper? Why? (This addresses a PK standard: Approaches tasks and problems with creativity, imagination and/or willingness to try new experiences) Post your work on Seesaw.

Math: 

Warm up: Count and move in patterns of two from 1-20. Loud, soft or clap, stamp or ask your child to give you two actions.

Match shapes. Show your child something that is a circle (Flat, not a sphere). Trace around it with your finger. Discuss how it is perfectly round; it is a curved line that always curves the same. 

Ask your child to talk about circles they know such as those found in toys, buildings, books, tri-or bicycle wheels and clothing. Find a variety of circular objects and play with them- roll, stack, trace and so on.

Have children make circles with their fingers, hands, arms, and mouths. Review a circle’s attributes: round and curves the same without a break. 

Reflect: Ask your child how they know some shapes are circles and some are not.

(Response to listen for: circles are all round, or circles go round and round. Explain again if your child does not answer.)

Activity:

Today we are going to be reading a story titled My Name is Yoon by Helen Recorvits

Like Chrysanthemum, Yoon is nervous to start a new school, because her name is different from the other students in her new class.

The story of Yoon, a little girl who has recently arrived in the United States from Korea. Her name means “Shining Wisdom” in Korean and has a magical look when written in her language. But now she must write it in English and become “Yoon.” She tries out different names as she struggles to adjust to her new country.

A tall tale is a story that is told over and over again but as time passes the story changes alittle. We know for sure that a man named John lived and planted appleseeds around the country. Hi boys and girls, I hope you are enjoying this beautiful autumn weather. Today we are continuing our understanding of feelings and know what makes each of us special.

Our story today is called I’m Gonna Like Me . It is about a girl and a boy deciding what they like about themselves. Enjoy the story.

Math

Today we have two Math games to play.

Snapshots

Parents, prepare beforehand by secretly placing two counters on a paper plate (or construction paper), covering the plate with a cloth you cannot see through. Ask children to tell about times when their family took photographs or “snapshots” with a camera. Tell children, during Snapshots, they will use their eyes and minds like a camera by making a picture (taking a snapshot) of what they see. Show your covered plate, and explain that counters are hidden under the cloth. Tell children to watch carefully, quietly, and with hands in their laps as you quickly uncover the plate to expose the counters. Uncover the plate for two seconds, and cover it again. Have children show with their fingers how many counters they saw and, once you have seen all children’s responses, ask them to tell how many counters they saw. Repeat the uncovering if needed. Uncover your plate indefinitely and, to check their answers, ask what children see. Allow them to say their answers, recognizing their contributions. Dependingng on children’s ability, repeat the activity with up to four counters lined up

Make Groups 

•  Model making a group of two to ensure that your child understands the task, and have the child  make their own groups of two (or an appropriate number). 
•  When possible, complete this activity outdoors. Children should choose safe items they do not have to harm, such as finding two leaves on the ground, not picking them from a tree.

• The little girl likes to look for shapes in the world around her.

Monday, September 19th 
Good morning, this week we have a lot to talk about. We begin our new question of the week. That question is - What do I bring to my classroom community?  We will be discussing our feelings and our special talents. Today is the first day of Autumn. Our discussions for the week will consist of what to expect this season, what changes we will see, and what these changes mean for us. We will begin our formal learning of letters. Our letter this week will be the letter Aa.

The foundation text for this week is On Monday It Rained. This book deals with feelings. Each day the little boy experiences a new feeling. This book also reviews the days of the week we talked about last week. When reading the story point out the feelings and demonstrate what these feelings look like on your face. Have your child make those faces. Reading emotions on people's faces is an important skill to develop. It is a skill we will repeat and review over the entire school year.
























Questions to ask after reading the story. Use these questions all week.

• What are some of the emotions the boy in this story felt?
• Why did the boy feel [insert any of the emotions described in the book]?
• Have you ever felt [insert name of emotion from above question]? When?
• Show me your [insert any emotion described in the book] face.
• The boy was angry when his cousin Janie wouldn’t share her new dump truck. What are some things you can do when you’re feeling angry about something?
• The boy said he always shares his toys with Janie. What do you know about sharing?
• Why did the boy tell his dad it had been quite a week?
• What emotions have you felt this week?

• Ask children how old they are. They should answer by saying the number and showing that many fingers. 
• Then ask children how many arms they have. Have them wave their arms.
•  Repeat with hands, fingers, legs, feet, toes, head, nose, eyes, and ears. Include motion when possible, such as “Wiggle your ten fingers,” and have fun!
•  Make silly, incorrect statements. For example, “I have four ears… three feet… five eyes.” Mix them with correct statements. Have children say whether or not you are correct. When children disagree, ask: How many do I have? How do you know?

Good morning. Today we are continuing find out about school and what we will learn. Today, we are going to meet david. David didn’t follow the rules in school. Why do we need rules?

Wednesday September 16^th
Parents if you would like to share pictures of your child doing any of the above projects that would be wonderful. You can send it to me on Seesaw. They will go in their journal. These pictures will help me see how your child is progressing.

Good morning. Today is we are continuing to learn about school and what we will learn.

Sign in by 8:30.

Ask your child, “Why do you think we go to school?” We will add it to our class chart. As an extension ask your child why they think teachers go to school. We will add these thoughts to the class chart. You can post this on Seesaw by writing it or having your child use the video or microphone to tell us.
(This activity meets a pre-k standard “Understands and follows routines and rules.”)

Rosie Goes to Preschool by Karen Katz: Rosie, a preschooler herself, shares what to expect at school.

 
 Dramatic Play: Be the teacher. Set up some toys as the students. Talk to your class about what they will be doing in school. “Read them your favorite book”.

Art: Use some catalogs, magazines etc. that you would recycle. Have your child hold the paper between their thumb and first two fingers to tear the it in strips and create a collage. This activity helps with pencil grip.

Math: Building Blocks: Where’s One? (Click on the book name for the PDF) Read the book up to 5 with your child.
Find a collection of up to 5 small objects that your child can use as counters such as coins, bottle tops or buttons.

• Invite children to play with counters
• Are they counting the objects accurately pointing at one object and saying the correct number name or are they skipping counters or counting some twice? Give fewer or more counters as needed.
• Can your child tell how many they have?

Tuesday, September 15th
Good Morning. Today we will be thinking about things you want to learn in Pre-K. Mouse went on an adventure to school and he did lots of things there. Listen to the story after you sign in.

If You take a Mouse to School

Ask your child to tell you some of the things that mouse did in school. Ask them to try and retell the story encourage them to use the words “First, next, then”.
Activities:

• Draw a picture of something you would like to learn in school this year. Take a picture of it on Seesaw then tell us about it using the microphone or video
• Say the rhyme and do the actions:  I'm so glad to see you, I really couldn't wait. Can you clap your hands and count to eight? One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight! Ask your child for the next idea.... i.e. stomp your feet, blink your eyes, count in Spanish.

Monday September 14th.
Welcome to our first full week of school.
Students need to sign in by 8:30 am on Seesaw to be counted as present in school. You can complete other assignments as your schedule permits.

This Is the Way We Go to School: A Book About Children Around the World by Edith Baer: Discover how children across the globe get to school.

Parents Discussion Points: How did you go to school?  Your student is going to school at home. Talk about how important it is to keep to a schedule for learning and that there will be assignments that they will complete for their teacher. If you have not done so yet, create a comfortable learning space with you child that they recognize as “school’. Let them help decide the supplies they need.

Activities:

• Draw a picture of your favorite way to go to school from the book. 
• Encourage your child to use table their toys to build a classroom. Ask them to include the things they think are most important in the classroom.
• Write or have your child write their name. Cut it into large pieces to make a puzzle and have them put it back together.
• Building Blocks Math: Count and Move. Say a number up to 5 and have your child do that many of an action while counting out loud: hop, clap, jumping jacks, knee bends etc. (Your child can come up with their own ideas for movements) Repeat a few times.
• Go to Seesaw and sign in. See activities.
